Day 2. Stunning Waterfalls – Black Beaches – Glaciers and Volcanoes

Pick up the car in the morning and begin your South Shore adventure. Visit Hveragerði, a small town with steaming vents everywhere and where hot spring water is used for heating greenhouses. Continue to the South Coast and pass the infamous Eyjafjallajökull Glacier and a volcano that last erupted in 2010.
Stop by the beautiful Seljalandsfoss Waterfall and, for a unique perspective, take a walk behind the waterfall to see the water crash over the cliff’s edge above. A little further east, stop at Skógafoss, another impressive waterfall with two majestic glaciers towering above.
Continue your journey to the Dyrhólaey Headland, a natural reserve where many seabirds nest in the summer. Visit the spectacular black beach of Reynisdrangar where huge basalt columns seem to rise from the ocean to meet the sky. Continue to the charming town of Vik, the southernmost town in the country. From Vík head back to Selfoss town for an overnight stay.

Continue a short distance to the majestic Gullfoss Waterfall, one of Iceland’s largest and most beautiful waterfalls. Continue to Þingvellir National Park. The Mid-Atlantic ridge runs right through Þingvellir forming an impressive rift valley where Iceland is drifting apart at the rate of 2 cm per year. Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is where the Icelandic Parliament was established in 930. Þingvellir is hauntingly beautiful despite its rugged lunar-like landscapes.
