We leave from Reykjavík and head to the interior geothermal area of Landmannalaugar, often referred to as “The Pearl of the Central Highlands”. We journey through the beautiful countryside of southern Iceland and proceed into the central highlands through Þjórsárdalur valley where we will visit Hjálparfoss waterfall.
From Hjálparfoss waterfall the route to Landmannalaugar takes you into the highlands and the next stop at Hnausapollur crater lake where turquoise blue water, black and red volcanic pumice and vegetated brims create a stunning scenery.
Arriving in Landmannalaugar, the dramatic display of light, colors and rock formations will likely keep you and your camera busy for a while, but you can opt to go for a 2 hour guided hike into the colorful hills surrounding Landmannalaugar and afterwards enjoy a relaxing bath in a natural warm spring.
The tour returns past Iceland’s most infamous and active volcano, Hekla, which was believed to be the entrance to hell during the dark Middle Ages. The volcano has erupted frequently in the past years and has left a thick carpet of ash and pumice over the immediate vicinity of the volcano. We return to Reykjavík over Hellisheiði mountain pass.
We recommend you bring your bathing suit and a towel.
