Day 2. Golden Circle and Snowmobiling on Langjökull Glacier

Pick up your car in the morning and head out for your Icelandic adventure. Today you will visit the famous route known as the Golden Circle. Your first stop will be Ţingvellir National Park, an UNESCO World Heritage Site with great importance from a geological and historical perspective. The first Icelandic parliament was established here in 930. Continue to the impressive Gullfoss waterfall, also called the Golden Waterfall. Gullfoss is one of the most majestic waterfalls in Iceland, plunging down 32 metres into the canyon in two stages. Next you will join a snowmobiling tour on Iceland´s second largest glacier – Langjökull. If the weather is good you will have a stunning view over the surrounding area from the glacier. After the snowmobling, head to Geysir geothermal area where you will see various hot springs and geysers. Geyser named Strokkur erupts every 8 minutes or so and boiling hot water jet up to 20 meters in the air. On the way to your lodging for the night stop of picturesque waterfall Faxi and impressive volcano crater Keriđ.

Day 3. The Scenic South Coast

After breakfast, continue your road trip along Iceland’s amazing south coast. Stop by the beautiful Seljalandsfoss waterfall and, for an exciting new perspective, take a walk behind the waterfall to see the water crash over the cliff’s edge above. A little further, the powerful waterfall Skógafoss plunges 60 meters, creating quite a splash. Visit the Black Beach Reynisfjara, where huge basalt columns seem to rise from the ocean bed in mysterious formations, and the Dyrhólaey Nature Reserve. The town of Kirkjubćjarklaustur waits across the Mýrdalssandur floodplains and Eldhraun, the most extensive lava field ever to flow on Earth in historical time. Stop by Fjađrárgljúfur Canyon located just west from Kirkjubćjarklaustur and the Kirkjugólfiđ (the Church Floor), a protected natural monument just east of Kirkjubćjarklaustur. Kirkjugólfiđ's basalt columns have been eroded and shaped by wind and water, but they look man-made.

Skógafoss Waterfall
Eyjafjallajökull Glacier
Vík Town
Fjađrárgljúfur Canion

Day 4. Skaftafell National Park and Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon

Continue across Skeidarársandur, a black sand desert, washed down by the numerous glacial rivers that originate at the nearby Vatnajökull Glacier, the largest in Europe, and the place where a sub-glacial eruption took place in the Grímsvötn Volcano, beneath Vatnajökull Icecap, in 2011. The powerful eruption quickly broke the ice cover of the glacier and began spewing ash into the air in a magnificent display. Continue to Skaftafell National Park, an oasis at the foot of the glacier that is famous for its tranquil, but rugged natural beauty. We recommend an easy hike to Svartifoss, one of Iceland’s most picturesque waterfalls. Continue to Jökulsarlón Glacial Lagoon, considered by many to be the greatest natural sight in the country and where huge icebergs float in the crystal clear lagoon. Join an amphibian boat tour to get a closer look of the icebergs. You might get lucky and see some seals swimming in the ice cold lagoon.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Overnight:
Kirkjubćjarklaustur area

Day 5. Glacier Hike on Sólheimajökull and Explore on Your Own Day

Head to Sólheimajökull glacier, which is part of the bigger Mýrdalsjökull glacier for a scenic glacier walk. You will be provided with all the necessary equipment and will learn about the impressive glacier terrain – crevasses, sink holes and ice ridges. After the glacier hike tour head back to Reykjavík. Now you have time to revisit some of the places you saw on the way east. Mostly all towns have a geothermal pool – taking a bath in one of those is a perfect way to relax after all the sightseeing and glacier adventures.

Where to eat during the tour?
In the small towns around Iceland you will find restaurants, bakeries and cafes where you can get something to eat. If you are going to the highlands we recommend purchasing something to take with you as there are very limited options for meals in the remote highland areas.

Are there any hidden charges?
There are no hidden charges or fees you should be aware of. Note that fuel and meals other than breakfast are not included.

What type of car is recommended?
During summer (May - September) any type of vehicle is sufficient for this tour. In winter between mid September – mid April we recommend a 4x4 vehicle as there is a chance of some snow or ice on the road. The cars are equipped with good winter tires during winter.

Do I need an international driver’s license?
No you do not need an international drivers license but you need a valid driver’s licence, which you will have held for at least two years. Travellers from overseas will need a licence issued in their country of residence along with an English translation (where appropriate). Some form of picture Identity is required, e.g. Passport, ID card etc. A valid credit card is also required.

How far is it between gas stations?
Gas stations can be found in almost all towns around Iceland so running out of gas is not a likely scenario. However before going to the highland areas we recommend filling up the tank as there are no gas stations in the highlands.

Do hotels and guesthouses offer Wi-Fi internet connection?
Most hotels and guesthouses in Iceland do provide free access to Wi-Fi internet. Some hotels and guesthouses do charge a small fee for access to the internet.
