Itinerary

Day 1. Arrival



Following your arrival at airport, transfer to your accommodation in Reykjavík, in a comfortable, Wi-Fi connected bus. Spend the rest of your day exploring the capital of Iceland.

Day 2. The Golden Circle and Snorkeling in Silfra fissure



Pick up your car in the morning and head out for your Iceland road trip adventure. Your first stop will be Þingvellir National Park where you will join a snorkelling tour in Silfra fissure. Nestled in the heart of Þingvellir National Park, Silfra is an otherworldly sight located on top of the tectonic plate rift between Europe and North America. The crystal-clear water in the deep fissure gives you the impression of being weightless as you float down with the lazy current. Silfra is frequently rated as one of the world’s top ten dive sites, and visibility reaches up to 100 metres. The water temperature in Slifra is only couple degrees (Celsius), but don´t worry, you will be provided with a dry suit that will keep you dry and warm. After the snorkelling tour you can explore Þingvellir National park, which is also an UNESCO World Heritage site. Continue to Geysir geothermal area filled with geysers and hot springs. One of the geysers sprouts boiling hot water 15-20 meters in the air every 8 minutes or so in a majestic display so make sure you stick around for the show. Continue further to Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall but Gullfoss waterfall is one of Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls and a site not to be missed.

Day 3. Kjölur Mountain Road and Hveravellir Hot Springs



Fill up the tank as there are no gas stations for the next 300 kilometers. Head inland to the highland track Kjölur taking you over the interior highlands between the massive ice fields of Hofsjökull and Langjökull glacier. Enjoy the magnificent mountainous views on this route and be sure to stop by the colourful Kerlingarfjöll Mountains before continuing to the strange Hveravellir geothermal area. There you will find a natural hot spring where you can enjoy a relaxing bath in the surreal environment. Take a short stroll around the lunar like area before continuing onwards to the fertile Skagafjörður region. We recommend a visit to Glaumbær folk museum to see the turf houses and learn about the old way of living in Iceland.

Day 4. Akureyri City and Lake Mývatn Area



Continue to Akureyri city, which is called the capital of the North. Akureyri offers wide variety of things to do and see. Visit the city tourist information centre for recommendations. After Akureyri head for one of Iceland’s most beautiful areas surrounding Lake Mývatn. Along the way, stop by the legendary Goðafoss Waterfall where an historical event took place in the year 1,000 when Icelanders converted to Christianity. The story goes that a so-called law speaker named Þorkell disposed of the pagan gods by throwing them into the waterfall—thus the name, Goðafoss, which means the "waterfall of the gods". Continue your journey to explore the abundance of natural wonders Lake Mývatn and the surrounding area, including amazing formations of geological interest. Visit the numerous highlights of the area: the Dimmuborgir lava field, the Námaskarð geothermal area, the Skútustaðagígar pseudo craters, the nature baths, Krafla Volcano, and numerous other interesting spots. Head back to Skagafjörður and relax before tomorrow´s adventures.

Day 5. White Water Rafting in Glacial River and Vatnsnes Peninsula



In the morning head to rafting base where you will be provided with all necessary equipment and soon you will be rafting in one of Europe´s best rafting rivers. You don´t need a previous experience in rafting, however you can´t be afraid of getting wet if you want to join this rafting tour. This rafting trip is graded 4 out of 5 and the minimum age to join this river rafting action is 18 years. Along thrilling action and adrenaline pumping you will witness the raw beauty of East Glacial River – its spectacular canyon and astonishing scenery. After the white water action, continue west to Vatnses Peninsula where you have great chances of seeing seals in their natural habitat. Visit the unique rock formations of Hvítserkur. We recommend that you visit the seal centre at Hvammstangi where you will learn more about these amazing animals.

Day 6. Deildartunguhver Hot Springs - Hraunfossar Waterfall - Hvalfjörður Fjord



Today you will explore the wonders of West Iceland. Your first stop will be Deildartunguhver Hot Spring, which yields over 180 litres of boiling water every second. Then, you will continue inland to see the Hraunfossar and Barnafossar Waterfalls where the water creeps from underneath the lave fields into the Hvítá River. From there, head to the Settlement Centre in Borgarnes town where you can explore the sagas of the settlement times and visit an exhibition of the famous Viking poet Egill Skallagrimsson. As you head back to Reykjavík make sure you drive through the scenic Hvalfjörður Fjord (The Whale Fjord). Drop off the car.

Day 7. Explore Reykjavík and an ATV Adventure

We are arriving very early. What is the check in time?
Check in time is usually between 14:00 - 16:00 for accommodation in Iceland. The only way to secure an early check in is to book the night before as well. However if a room is ready you should be able to check in early.

Where to eat during the tour?
In the small towns around Iceland you will find restaurants, bakeries and cafes where you can get something to eat. If you are going to the highlands we recommend purchasing something to take with you as there are very limited options for meals in the remote highland areas.

Are there any hidden charges?
There are no hidden charges or fees you should be aware of. Note that fuel and meals other than breakfast are not included.

What type of car is recommended?
During summer (May - September) any type of vehicle is sufficient for this tour. In winter between mid September – mid April we recommend a 4x4 vehicle as there is a chance of some snow or ice on the road. The cars are equipped with good winter tires during winter.

Do I need an international driver’s license?
No you do not need an international drivers license but you need a valid driver’s licence, which you will have held for at least two years. Travellers from overseas will need a licence issued in their country of residence along with an English translation (where appropriate). Some form of picture Identity is required, e.g. Passport, ID card etc. A valid credit card is also required.

How far is it between gas stations?
Gas stations can be found in almost all towns around Iceland so running out of gas is not a likely scenario. However before going to the highland areas we recommend filling up the tank as there are no gas stations in the highlands.

Do hotels and guesthouses offer Wi-Fi internet connection?
Most hotels and guesthouses in Iceland do provide free access to Wi-Fi internet. Some hotels and guesthouses do charge a small fee for access to the internet.
